Getting a Sports Degree
Sep 21, 2008
When asked what he wanted to major in when he went to college, the only thing that my brother could come up with was “sports”. He was a terrific all-around athlete and that was the thing that he really had a desire to do. Unfortunately, parents and teachers pressed him into getting a more “responsible” college degree. To this day, he regrets not getting the degree that he wanted to get.
There are definitely some risks involved when you get a degree in some sort of sport. If your goal is to play at a professional level, you run the risk of not making it that far or the risk of getting injured and being unable to play after all. However, most people who have gone for a degree in sports say that the rewards are worth the risks.
It’s a good idea to choose a sports degree that will give you some options in regards to different jobs and different levels of play. For example, going to golf school will allow you to learn to play golf professionally but it will also let you get a different golf job such as a job where you teach golf to others. This lets you do the thing that you love without taking unnecessary risks with your career path.
