Pitching Again

I used to pitch for a women’s softball team in college, but it’s not something you usually keep doing after graduating and joining the work force about ten years ago.   Also, I started having some problems with elbow tendinitis in school.  So it was probably a good thing I didn’t keep playing, even though I missed it. Interestingly enough, the sporting goods company I work for decided to start an employees’ recreational softball team at each branch store and have them compete against each other.  Last spring was our first season.  My co-workers knew I used to be on a college team, so before I knew it, I was pitching my first game in years and having a blast.

Incidentally, we won that opening game and ended the season in second place.  Now we were only playing once every two weeks and I was always careful to do warm-up exercises, so there was no sign of the old tendinitis.  Just the same, I decided to get in better shape at a softball training school in the city.  They have a lot of softball and baseball programs for all kinds of players, and they put on Florida baseball camps and clinics for different age groups.  I just love going there because they have so much great stuff.  What’s more, they even offer baseball school franchises.  They’re always looking for people who are interested in new franchise opportunities.

Polling of College Students Proves that Finances are a Big Concern

As a student, I am really disappointed at the lack of action when it comes to addressing our biggest issues and problems.  Now, I am not saying that we need a handout or anything like that, but rather we just need our voice to be heard.

I have seen some movement lately in the area of student issues that is promising.  You see, there was a survey done recently by our student union to see what mattered to the student body, so that they could bring these issues to the college and planning services branch and have them addressed.

It took about three days to gather the survey results and the outcome was as expected.  It turns out that what concerns the students the most is ways to save on the cost of college as well as more effort in terms of making affording education a reality for most people.

We will have to see what the college does in terms of addressing these issues, but it is nice to see that all the students are on a unified front - we all realize that finances are a big concern for all of us.  Hopefully, some solutions will come down the pipeline that will help us with our problems.

I Want To Cook Like Mom Always Did

I have been looking at cooking schools culinary arts lately because I want to start learning to cook really well. My mother was always such an amazingly wonderful cook. She would make gourmet meals every day for every meal, morning, noon and night, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Even her snacks that she would serve us throughout the day would somehow be more delicious than any other kid’s mom could make. I do not know how she did it, in fact I guess that is just the thing, I do not know how she did it but I want to.

I am hoping that the culinary training provided by Culinary arts institutes these days will shed some light on how she would do it. My sister has tried to copy the things mom would make over the years and she has done a fairly good job of it but I do not seem able to do it naturally on my own without instruction. I guess it is possible that my sister acquired the natural food making genes and I am just left on my own to find a good trainer to help me to be able to do the same thing.

College and family bonding

My sister works full time, raises two kids and is taking classes toward her online associate degree. Did I mention she also sings in the church choir? I’m constantly amazed at my sister’s endurance in pursuing her education and raising her family. After her associate degree my sister wants to attain a bachelor degree in human resources.

My sister’s daughter at nineteen is also taking college classes. She’s in an online humanities degree program. Right now both mother and daughter are struggling through some required math and English courses. College is challenging, but the rewards are plentiful.

I’ve seen a lot of positive changes within my niece. In high school she was a poor student, and a lot of her self esteem came from male attention. Now my niece is building her self esteem from her own accomplishments. To her amazement, my niece is getting an ‘’A” in her math class. In high school she barely passed her math classes. One great advantage is the free tutoring her college offers.  My niece visits her math tutor several times a week, and does practice problems on math websites. Last week her little brother helped her with fraction homework. Did you know college can promote family bonding?

I Don’t Know What I Want to Be

I have been soul searching for a long time and I just can not come up with a career choice.  It’s really hard to figure out what you want to be for the rest of your life when you have barely experienced anything.  I am not entirely sure what I am even good at, at this point in my life.  However, I do know that now is the time to go to school and get my ba degree, so what should I do?

First of all, I am realizing that many people don’t know what they want to do for an occupation so I am aware that I am not a minority with my feelings.  In addition, just because I do not specifically know what I want to do as a career I do know what types of activities I like.  Therefore I went to some sites that assess personality and it helped me determine that I might enjoy getting a bachelor degree in fire science or a criminal justice associate degree online.

Furthermore, I also came to realize that I really don’t have to decide on my lifelong occupation right now, yet I can still take courses I enjoy that will go toward a degree program.  The degree program I choose right now doesn’t have to be related but rather can serve as a good foundation.
