I’ve had my certificate in cardiovascular technology for quite some time now, earned at SBI Atlanta. When you’ve been in the business for as long as I have, you get to see how things really work, and you start to become familiar with the people and institutions in the healthcare field. It’s always seemed strange to me how people end up in the jobs they do. Either they stumble into the field by chance, trying lots of different jobs basically at random before settling down, or they plan everything out in advance. I had a friend in high school who wanted to be an accountant when he was in grade school. Not the most common aspiration, but he did. He finished high school and set out getting his accountancy training. It was all he thought about when he registered for classes in college, and as quickly as anyone is able, he was a licensed accountant. In his case, it all worked out nicely, because he likes his job. But I have to marvel at it—he made the decision when he was barely out of diapers. He didn’t know the first thing about any jobs, least of all accounting, when he picked it. You have to do a job to know it, but you have to choose it before you do it, so you make an uninformed decision almost by definition. Especially true for me, since I took healthcare courses in Atlanta long before I started my job. All I can say is, I got lucky and picked a rewarding career.
