Although online education is rapidly becoming much more acceptable, there is still a healthy debate on whether all subjects can be taught online, or whether certain subjects lend themselves to the online format better than others.
In general, I do think that academic subjects are much more easily taught online than subjects that require a lot of hands-on work. Still others straddle the issue: For instance, is LEED test prep capable of being taught online, or is LEED training – which has to do with topics related to construction — better taught in a more traditional format?
I think that with many degree and certificate programs, there are ways to get around the limitations of email and the typical online classroom platform. Here are a few ideas for how teachers and students can achieve the same or better quality of learning in an online format:
- Virtual classroom. Many online classroom platforms offer virtual classrooms, where the instructor and students can all sign in and interact, just as if they were in an actual classroom. This can be done at a certain time of day in real time, or at everyone’s leisure in a message board or forum format.
- Timed exams. A great fear surrounding online education is that the students aren’t actually learning anything. For instance, students have the ability to flip through the book or course notes when taking an exam, so many people fear that the students have no incentive to actually learn the material. Instructors can solve this problem by putting a time limit on tests that doesn’t allow students the time to look up the answer to every question.
- Pictures. Digital photographs can be taken and sent as a way of “turning in” visual or physical projects that the student has worked on.
- Video. Video is an excellent tool that sites such as YouTube have made widely available. Use video for course subjects such as public speaking, or to demonstrate a completed project for a vocational program.
- High Internet connection speeds. Because of the high Internet connection speeds these days, it is much more possible to send large files, such as engineering projects, via the Internet. This enables students to complete complex projects and still turn in their work in an online format.

I recently moved to Florida from Kansas. The beaches are fun, and the nightlife is amazing. Coming from a landlocked state, though, has severely dampened my ability to be one of the locals. I have never had a chance to learn how to swim. The Midwest really isn’t known for all of their community pools! It’s been a while, but I did have some opportunity to learn in high school where they had an indoor pool. I’ve learned the basics, but not really enough to feel comfortable out on the beach.
Just two weeks ago I found Swimming Schools Miami and signed up. I had my very first lesson last Monday, and have already been able to do ten laps with each style (freestyle, the breaststroke, and backstroke are what they’ve taught so far). When it’s all said and done, the Swimming lessons in Miami have been a huge help. I’ve gained so much more confidence, and I’m beginning to know how to swim. I think I’ll be planning on hitting the beaches within the next couple of weeks to try out what I’ve learned in the Atlantic. I’m pretty relieved that I can go sun bathing, and jump into the water going much deeper than knee high.

The style of my home has a modern and slightly industrial look to it. I have used a lot of white, taupe, and stainless steel colors in decorating. Because it is so distinctive any pieces that do not match look really out of place. When I received my master’s degree a family member gave me an expensive wooden frame as a graduation gift but it really doesn’t match the colors and textures in my home and it has a more classic look to it then what I would normally select.
